.Veteran French rocker Johnny Hallyday has cancelled his farewell tour in order to recover after emergency surgery in the United States.
The 160,000 fans who bought tickets for the 24 concerts across France, which had been due to start January 8, will be reimbursed.
Doctors woke him on Tuesday after several days in a drug-induced coma.
The 66-year-old was hospitalised last week in Los Angeles after complications from a back operation performed in Paris last month.
Though little known abroad, Hallyday has sold more than 100 million albums and played 45 major tours in a career that began in the 1960s.
Hallyday’s son David said at the weekend that his father’s life was “out of danger”.

Andre Agassi admits using crystal meth

.

LATEST:
Andre Agassi’s upcoming autobiography contains an admission that he used crystal meth in 1997, the year he dropped to No. 141 in the rankings.

In a story posted on People magazine’s Web site Tuesday, Agassi says: “I can’t speak to addiction, but a lot of people would say that if you’re using anything as an escape, you have a problem. A writer from SI first revealed the crystal meth reference on a Twitter posting Tuesday.”

Excerpts from the book are being printed this week by People and Sports Illustrated.

In the posting on People’s Web site, Agassi says he “was worried for a moment, but not for long,” about how fans would react if they found out he used drugs.

“The tweet from SI that posted earlier today which tipped to one of the revelations in the book – Agassi’s use of crystal meth in 1997 – was accurate,” Knopf spokesman Paul Bogaards told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday.

“I wore my heart on my sleeve and my emotions were always written on my face.

Among the most successful – and, without a doubt, one of the most popular – tennis players in history, Agassi won eight Grand Slam singles titles before retiring in 2006. I was actually excited about telling the world the whole story,” Agassi says.

Agassi’s first major championship came at Wimbledon in 1992, and he won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He drew attention not just for his play, but also for his outfits, his hairstyles and his relationships with women.

He resuscitated his career in 1998, making the biggest one-year jump into the top 10 in the history of the ATP rankings. . The next season, he won the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam, then added a second career US Open title en route to finishing 1999 at No. The next season, he won the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam, then added a second career US Open title en route to finishing 1999 at No.

Man in custody not serial attacker, residents say

.

Mangere residents are raising doubts about whether police have the right man in custody following a string of sex attacks in the South Auckland suburb in the last two months.

A teenage boy is due to appear in court today after being arrested in connection with a sex attack on a woman in South Auckland yesterday.

The 14-year-old is due to appear in Manukau Youth Court earlier today facing one count of indecent assault against a 29-year-old woman. The woman was knocked to the ground and sexually assaulted before her screams attracted the attention of residents.

In the incident yesterday, the woman was attacked in an alleyway running behind Nga Iwi Primary School as she on her way to pick up a child from school. .

Police have been investigating a string of four sex attacks on females since early last month, the youngest victim being an eight-year-old girl who was raped in an alleyway last week.

However, the description of the arrested man did not match that given by victims of a string of recent sex attacks, Mangere Maori Wardens chairman Thomas Henry told Radio New Zealand.Police have not yet said whether the man taken into custody was arrested in connection with four sex attacks in the alleyway since September 8, or whether charges have been laid. The assault yesterday may have been a copycat attack, Mr Henry said, although he did not understand why anyone would commit such an act.The daylight assaults have been described as “brazen” by police.Police were following up a strong lead from a resident who said they knew who the attacker was and further details would be released earlier today. She punched him and he fled.In an attack last Thursday, a man grabbed a 28-year-old woman pushing her son in a pram in the alleyway. The man was described as Polynesian, aged between 18 and 20, and 165cm tall. The man was described as Polynesian, aged between 18 and 20, and 165cm tall. The man was described as Polynesian and wore a black baseball cap, a white hooded sweatshirt with a black or dark collar. On Monday last week, an eight-year-old girl was raped by a Maori or Polynesian man while walking home from school with her six-year-old sister, who screamed for help. Vodafone faces fair trading charges

.

The Commerce Commission is prosecuting Vodafone for six breaches of the Fair Trading Act, claiming it misled consumers in broadband and mobile phone advertisements.

The commission claimed Vodafone misrepresented the coverage of its wireless broadband network in an advertising campaign that ran for 18 months till April last year, the size of its 3G network, and the price of some mobile data services.

Vodafone said it had never deliberately misled customers and had addressed each of the concerns when raised.

The ANZ bank said risk appetites appeared unquenched as markets expected interest rates in the United States to remain lower into 2010.54 yesterday evening.

The NZ dollar managed to outperform the aussie, largely due to a function of less liquidity on the NZ dollar side, ANZ said.

The correlation with equities looked to be back, as gains in the Dow Jones industrial average translated into gains in the antipodean currencies.”

That was especially so as the Reserve Bank of Australia had already started hiking interest rates and there was increasing talk that the next move would be 50 basis points.

“This continues to be a source of much frustration as the NZD side should be underperforming based on relative fundamentals.22c by 8am from A80.

.

Clothing and outdoor equipment retailer Kathmandu is hoping to raise up to $457 million in an initial public offering being launched in New Zealand and Australia.

The company was offering a total of 197.4 million shares to investors representing 99 per cent of the issued capital of Kathmandu.65 to A$1.

The indicative price range for the offer per share was $A1.01 to $2.90 and in New Zealand at $2.32.7m to A$374.

The gross proceeds from the offer were expected to be in the range of A$277.6m and $457.9m and in New Zealand between $338.

The offer would open on October 27 and close on November 6, before being listed on the New Zealand Exchange and Australian Securities Exchange on November 18.2m.

Kathmandu was founded in Christchurch in the 1987 by Jan Cameron, who sold the company to existing owners Goldman Sachs JBWere and Australia’s Quadrant Private Equity in 2006.

Kathmandu was founded in Christchurch in the 1987 by Jan Cameron, who sold the company to existing owners Goldman Sachs JBWere and Australia’s Quadrant Private Equity in 2006.

The company has also announced big expansion plans.

The IPO would be the first in New Zealand since Farming Systems Uruguay floated in December 2007.

It had already opened three and a further three were expected to open before Christmas.

Kathmandu chief executive Peter Halkett said Kathmandu planned to open 12 new stores in Australia and New Zealand this financial year.

Kathmandu chairman James Strong said the company had undergone a transformation over the past three and a half years, opening more than 30 new stores.

Halkett said Kathmandu has identified 70 locations in Australia and New Zealand to assess for suitable store sites (including the 12 new stores).

”We believe a dual listing will provide Kathmandu with growth flexibility, and give investors the opportunity to own shares in a very well recognised retail brand which resonates with customers’ aspirations of travel and adventure,” Strong said.

He said the dual stock exchange listing was the next logical step for Kathmandu’s growth plans.

On completion of the IPO, current owners Goldman Sachs JBWere Principal Investment Area and Quadrant Private Equity would hold, in aggregate, between 0 per cent and 15 per cent of the listed company, with Kathmandu management to own approximately 1.

Proceeds of the offer would be used by Kathmandu to acquire all the shares in Milford Group Holdings Limited, the entity that currently owns the Kathmandu business, and reduce existing debt levels and pay the fees and expenses of the offer.
