Traffic, trains return to normal

.

Roads in the lower North Island, closed during weekend flooding, rain-related slips and crashes, have reopened today.

Do you have photos of the wild weather? Click here to send them to us.

A weather-related crash on the northbound lane of State Highway 2 near Avalon disrupted traffic and a slip near Pukerua Bay stopped trains on the Paraparaumu line into Wellington earlier today.

State Highway 2 between Pakuratahi and Kaitoke has reopened after one lane was closed by a slip at Kaitoke Gardens, and Ngauranga Gorge, north of Wellington, has been cleared of flooding that resulted from a missing manhole cover.

All disruptions were cleared by midday and vehicle traffic and trains were running as usual.

Awamutu Grove in Lower Hutt was also flooded but remained open.

A slip at the Johnsonville off-ramp that slowed traffic and a rockfall that blocked State Highway 58 at Haywards have both been cleared.

Metservice forecasters predict more rain as a north-bound front moves over the west of the South Island on Tuesday, crossing over the lower North Island, with heavy falls over the Tararua Ranges.

Mr Barrow also forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms over Westland and Fiordland tomorrow, warning people going to the bush and mountains to keep a weather eye.

“People planning a trip in the area should still watch out for rivers and streams rising rapidly and keep up to date with the latest forecasts,” Metservice forecaster Gerard Barrow said.

Wind gusts of 155kph were clocked at Cape Turnagain on the Wairarapa Coast, he said.

Powerful westerly winds hitting much of the country would tail off on Wednesday, with lighter winds continuing into the weekend, Metservice spokesman Bob McDavitt said. As the sun moves south, the longer days mean extra warmth over the Southern Ocean and this powers up the winds known as the `Roaring 40s’.

“We are now stepping into the months of spring.”

TRAINS DISRUPTED

Meanwhile, trains on the Paraparaumu line were disrupted by a slip near Pukerua Bay, and commuters faced delays of up to 20 minutes, OnTrack spokeswoman Ruth Larsen said.”

WINDY CONDITIONS

Heavy rain and gale-force winds played havoc with motorists in Wellington yesterday.

Power would be cut to the train lines while a digger was brought in to clear the tracks, Ms Larsen said.

Treat Bakshi like anyone else – Key

.

National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi has assured Prime Minister John Key he has not done anything wrong and Mr Key wants him to be treated like everyone else during an inquiry into immigration allegations.

The inquiry, involving list MP Mr Bakshi, is back on after police were provided with fresh information.

There have also been allegations about attempts to silence witnesses.

Mr Bakshi has denied allegations he accepted money for false job offers to bolster Indian immigrant applications.

“I’ve directly and personally asked him whether there’s any truth to the allegations, he’s given me a personal assurance there is not.

Mr Key, in Australia for meetings with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, said Mr Bakshi should be “treated like any other New Zealand citizen”, Radio New Zealand reported.

Acting Prime Minister Bill English said yesterday Mr Bakshi was “quite clear he hasn’t done anything wrong”.

“If there is grounds for investigation then the authorities should conduct those investigations and they’ll get full support from the Government if it’s required,”

Mr Bakshi would be “called to account” if there was a case to answer, Mr Key said.

It has now provided police with further information on the allegations after interviewing a new informant. Immigration New Zealand started an inquiry last year but closed it in March because of a lack of evidence.

Police said they were looking at the role of former immigration consultant Darshan Singh Bains, who took job offers from Mr Bakshi and gave them to Indians to use as part of their applications to migrate to New Zealand.

The service also provided police with a sworn statement, obtained by Labour MP Pete Hodgson from another new informant, which said complainants were encouraged by people in India to drop the matter; “because he was going to be the first Sikh MP in New Zealand”. .

Mr Bakshi said he knew nothing about the police investigation, and had not had any contact with Immigration since its file was closed.

Council fires porn star’s husband

.

The mayor of a small US town has defended the town council’s decision to fire its city manager after officials learned his wife is an adult film actress.

Fort Myers Beach mayor Larry Kiker insistedthat Scott Janke’s termination had nothing to do with his spouse’s job, but that the Florida town was merely trying to maintain order.

Janke married Anabela Mota Janke, who goes by the stage name Jazella Moore, in October.

“What we were addressing was a situation where we weren’t going to be able to govern the town with all the disruption and interruption,” Kiker said. He began working for the town in March 2008.

“I’ve done over 30 interviews (with media) .

The plan appears to have backfired.. I’ve gotten hundreds of emails, we’re getting threatened,” Kiker said.. . “Nobody is getting any work done around here.”

However, the mayor also noted: “It was not his job performance.

“We didn’t fire him because his wife was a porn star,” Kiker griped, adding that the decision wasn’t a “knee-jerk reaction. We all liked Scott . We all liked Scott . He’s a good guy.. He said he then spoke to Janke, who agreed “this was going to be a big disruption for the town and he was not going to be able to do his job well”.”

Kiker said he learned of Janke’s wife’s job after receiving a telephone call from a reporter on Tuesday.

Councilman Tom Babcock said at a council meetingthat Janke was fired because his wife’s profession brought an inaccurate image to Fort Myers Beach, the News-Press of Fort Myers reported.

Within a few hours, Kiker had called an emergency town council meeting, and the group voted 5-0 to exercise a “no-cause” clause in Janke’s contract, effectively firing him.

Janke said on Wednesday night that he and his wife had their “heads held high.

“When you become a public figure you are held to a different level of scrutiny and ethics,” Babcock said at the meeting. We’ve done nothing wrong,” Janke said.”

“We have done nothing to be embarrassed about.

Dan Miller, editor at the AVN Media Network, which covers the adult industry, said he had not heard of a similar case, but noted the adult film industry is “not necessarily widely accepted” in mainstream American politics.

Diane Duke, executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry, said the firing could present legal problems for the town.

Prosecutors ask jurors to convict Spector

Eccentric music producer Phil Spector has been convicted of murdering a Hollywood actress in 2003, and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

In his second trial, held after jurors deadlocked in 2007, Spector, 69, was found guilty of second-degree murder by a Los Angeles jury.

The man once revered for revolutionising pop music in the 1960s with his layered “Wall of Sound” production technique, faces 18 years to life behind bars when he is sentenced on May 29.

Lana Clarkson, 40, a B-movie actress, died of a shot to the mouth, fired from Spector’s gun in the foyer of his home outside Los Angeles on February 3, 2003. The two met hours earlier at a Hollywood nightclub.

California criminal defense attorney Darren Kavinoky said Spector could be parolled only after spending the initial 18 years in prison.

“He’s got a better chance of winning the lottery than ever being released,” said Kavinoky, who was not involved in the case.

Spector, who worked with The Ronettes, The Beatles, Cher and Leonard Cohen at the height of his fame, denied murdering Clarkson. His lawyers said on Monday they would appeal.

He did not testify at either trial and although his hands shook while the verdict was read, he showed little emotion. He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict.

SPECTOR ‘HAS A PROBLEM WITH RAGE’ – PROSECUTOR

Prosecutors argued that the shooting of Clarkson was part of a pattern of gun play and violence that Spector displayed toward women.

After the verdict, prosecutor Alan Jackson told reporters Spector “has a problem with rage, and he is a bully.”

Spector’s lawyers claimed that Clarkson was depressed about her failing career and committed suicide.

She worked as a hostess at the House of Blues in Hollywood when she met the man who produced songs like the Righteous Brothers’ hit You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin.’

Clarkson starred in such little-known movies as Barbarian Queen and Amazon Women on the Moon.

Clarkson’s family, who also filed a wrongful death civil suit against Spector, said they were “pleased that the jury had rejected the distortion and trashing of (her) life by the defence”.

“Justice has been served,” they said in a statement. .”

The two long trials featured testimony from five women and a jury visit to the mock castle where the reclusive Spector lived. None of his old pop music friends testified in his defence.

Spector attorney Doron Weinberg criticised the decision to allow several female witnesses to testify about incidents dating back 20 years.

It “left us with very little of a chance to have a fair trial,” Weinberg said.

The jury forewoman told reporters the panel based their decision on the totality of the evidence, rather than specific incidents.

Spector had a troubled early life. His father committed suicide, his sister spent time in mental institutions and Spector suffered bouts of severe depression.

Shortly before Clarkson was shot, Spector told British journalist Mick Brown in a rare interview that he had a bipolar personality and had “devils that fight inside me”.

In 2006, he quietly wed for the fourth time, marrying model/actress Rachelle Short, who is about 30 years his junior.

Govt to review electricity industry

.

Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee has launched an immediate Ministerial review of the electricity sector.

Brownlee today released Terms of Reference for a review and announced that six independent experts would be appointed to a Technical Advisory Group.
“There are a number of other reports completed or underway in the electricity sector.
“The government has concerns about security of supply, the affordability of electricity, and duplication of electricity sector governance,” said Brownlee.
The six experts on the Technical Advisory Group are Brent Layton, David Russell, Lewis Evans, Stephen Franks, Toby Stevenson, and Miriam Dean. The best way to draw the threads together and make timely decisions to build public, industry and investor confidence is to proceed with a Ministerial review,” he said. The first phase would look at regulatory and governance issues, with the second addressing issues of electricity market performance.
Brownlee said there would be two phases of work in the Ministerial review.
Brownlee’s announcement comes a day after state owned Genesis Power announced price rises, effective from May 17, for 75,000 residential customers.
“It may be that the review process throws up some obvious short-term improvements that can be made and if so these will be acted on immediately,” he said. And Meridian said the previous month it would increase power bills for 180,000 customers by an average of 6. .5 percent, on top of a 6 percent increase last September.
