Cameron: David did the business

.

A battered Shane Cameron has vowed to fight on, speaking of the disappointment of his loss to David Tua but also respectful of his opponent’s power and skills.

Cameron fronted up to the media for the first time since his second round knockout loss to Tua last weekend. He removed them to reveal the damage done by Tua’s wicked combinations that sent him to the canvas three times – both eyes were blackened with his right eye looking particularly ugly.

He came into an Auckland press conference wearing oversized sunglasses. I’m still here ready to go.

But he looked straight ahead and declared: “The important thing for me now is moving forward. He faces a three-month stand down as part of boxing’s rules after suffering a TKO.”

But the reality is Cameron won’t be going anywhere too far too soon. . He will use that time, as planned, to have three plates removed from his troublesome right hand. Buthe got me good in that first round and I never recovered.

“It was a hard loss for me because I came in confident I would win.. He finished me off in the second . what can I say?

“David did the business on the night..You could see the determination in Dave’s eyes to come forward and get me out of there. He’s a tremendous man and a tremendous champion.

Cameron said it was difficult to compare the power of Tua’s punches to his previous 24 opponents as a professional.”

Cameron said he didn’t underestimate or disrespect Tua and said his trash talk before the fight was simply aimed at hyping up the occasion. He has that punching ability and normally he knocks people out with one punch.

“There’s no secret what power David has, that he’s one of the biggest punchers ever.”

Cameron’s camp were taking some consolation in that, almost proud of the number of hits their man had withstood before eventually being counted out seven seconds into the second round. I managed to stay there for a lot more.

His manager Ken Reinsfield believed Cameron would be “one of the few fighters” who could have handled that barrage.

Fears as ferry search continues

.

LATEST:
A British man carrying a New Zealand driver’s licence has died in the overnight sinking of Tongan ferry Princess Ashika.

At least 33 people, many of them women and children, are feared dead after the sinking of the inter-island ferry, which was heading from Nuku’alofa to Ha’afeva, in the Nomuka Islands group. .

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully told reporters in Cairns the body of a European man found after the ferry sank was a British citizen who had a New Zealand driver’s licence on him.

”It’s obviously a terrible tragedy,” he said.

MFAT had had no calls from anyone about other New Zealanders, Mr McCully said.”

The sinking was doubly tragic for the Pacific region as it followed the previous month’s ferry sinking in Kiribati, which left 33 people dead, Mr McCully said.

”Prime Minister (John) Key has taken the opportunity earlier today of conveying the condolences of the New Zealand people to the Tongan Prime Minister, who is obviously here at the forum.

Taliofa Kototeaua from the ship operators, the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia, told that one of the rescue ships had recovered a body and taken it ashore.

New Zealand would help with marine safety issues, which would ”definitely come under scrutiny”.

TV1 reported that at least one of the missing was a New Zealand-based Tongan.

Another was on a container ship.

The Matangi Tonga website says no women and children have yet been rescued from the ferry that sank off the coast of Tonga overnight.

Ms Kototeaua said there were six foreigners on the ship, including Japanese, German and French nationals.

“No women or children made it,” he told Matangi Tonga Onlineat around midday today.

It quoted Siaosi Lavaka, who was rescued from the Princess Ashika, saying that all the seven lifeboats that got away were filled with men.

He said the sea was rough and the waves went into the lower deck of the ferry where the crew were.

He said he believed the women and children were all stuck inside the ferry when it went down as they were sleeping when the ferry got into difficulties. The ferry then began to overturn and some passengers jumped off.

The ferry rocked and he believed this caused the cargo to move to one side.”

Basketballer’s head start

Most 16-year-olds like to conform; be one of the crowd.

But St John’s student Mark Overdevest has no choice in the matter. At 216cm tall – seven foot one inch in the old money – he stands out in the crowd, and more importantly, on the basketball court. Waikato basketball icon Mal Young recalls the story of when the teen’s mum told Young about her son.

Overdevest was always going to be a big lad.

Overdevest is the only Waikato member of the New Zealand under 18 basketball team, who this weekend head to Villagarcia de Grousa, in northern Spain, to play in a Spanish Invitational tournament. At that stage he was eight years old and the tallest person in his school, including the teachers.

He knows it’s a big chance and he’s looking forward to the opportunity to impress scouts who use it as a way to check out some of the world’s best young talent, even though the plane trip may not be the most comfortable.”

Overdevest said the competition could help him try to reach his goals of a US college team, or a spell in Europe before hopefully getting to the NBA.

“One of the things I’m looking forward to is maybe playing against some guys near my height. .

Being grilled about his basketball career, goals, dreams and idols, Overdevest is shy and guarded but he’s come to terms with his height and doesn’t slouch like he once did. For a big centre he has a handy jump-shot and ball skills that many big guys lack.

But he’s not just all about being tall.

He’s not awkward like some larger players, but impressive.

He’s not awkward like some larger players, but impressive.

“He’s got good footwork too.

“He has the ability and the desire to go a long way, but who’s he up against anyway?” Homik said.”

There is a saying in basketball that point guards are a dime a dozen. He’s got a lot to work on still, but Mark can be very good.

The late Murray McMahon played a major part in Overdevest’s development, as he did with so many top young basketballers.

FRANCE: Sarkozy to meet Dalai Lama in Poland in December

.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the EU presidency, said Thursday he will meet the Dalai Lama next month during a visit to Poland.

The Dalai Lama is a distinguished man, a man who inspires profound respect and I will have the opportunity to see him in Poland on December 6, Sarkozy said.

During a visit to France in August, the Dalai Lama met Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, human rights minister Rama Yade and first lady Carla Bruni.

The Tibetan spiritual leader and Sarkozy will both be attending ceremonies in Poland to mark the 25th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Lech Walesa, the anti-communist union activist who later became president.

China maintains that a meeting with the Dalai Lama at an official level is tantamount to meddling in internal affairs.

But Sarkozy declined a meeting with the Buddhist leader after Beijing warned that such direct contact would have serious consequences for bilateral relations.

The Tibetans should not be subjected to repression and, like everyone else, they have a right to freedom, Sarkozy said at the Elysee palace.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking independence for Tibet but the exiled leader has said he is seeking autonomy and religious freedom, not secession.

One does not justify the other, of course.

But at the same time, should we sever contact with one billion three hundred million Chinese who have made unquestionable progress over the past decade? Sarkozy added. . But if we do not go to Beijing, if we do not discuss, if we do not share our concerns, if we do not progress step-by-step, then how will we ensure that the idea that we have of respect for rights and freedoms will prevail? he said.

But Sarkozy decided to attend the ceremony and has since sought to put relations on a stronger footing.
