Molenaar ‘bullied’ partner into selling drugs

.

The former partner of deceased Napier gunman Jan Molenaar has described her relationship with him as “awesome” but also one where he bullied her.

In Napier District Court today Delwyn Keefe, 44, gave evidence during a disputed facts hearing in front of Justice John Wild.

The dispute centres on a three-hour video interview Keefe gave on the morning of May 20 to Detective Todd Lee at the Napier police station.

The Crown says Keefe admitted during the interview to selling cannabis, in quantities up to ounces, continually over five years. The interview covered her relationship with Molenaar as well as cannabis selling at the address. The Crown says it came from the sale of cannabis.

Five-thousand Australian dollars were found at Molenaar’s Chaucer Rd address.

Keefe told the court she only sold the cannabis because Molenaar bullied her into it..

“He would get very angry . He would say ‘You do as you are told,’ so I would do it.. She sold cannabis on the “odd occasion”, in small amounts, usually tinnies, and on three occasions sold half-ounces of cannabis.”

Molenaar would arrange and order her to do deliveries when she got home.

Cannabis was not sold continually at the address because Molenaar had employment at various times and did not need to sell cannabis.

She described her relationship with him as “awesome”. She had her own income and the Australian currency found at the address had come from her earnings. He was my best friend .

“He was an awesome person… . He was honest and kind. During the interview she was “emotional” and had not answered questions “properly”. She had expected to go down to the station to sign papers so she could move back into the Chaucer Rd house.

The shooting sparked a two-day siege that ended when police forced their way in and found Molenaar dead from a gunshot wound, believed to have been self-inflicted.

Keefe was later charged with offering to sell cannabis and possession of cannabis for supply at the house on the day of the shooting, and selling cannabis over a period of more than five years.

Keefe was remanded on bail for sentencing on December 4. Justice Wild will review the tapes of the police interview in the meantime before making a decision on the established facts.

Cabinet approves joint World Cup broadcasting bid

.

Following weeks of negotiation and speculation, the Government has put its support behind a joint bid from Maori Television (MTS), TVNZ and TV3 for free-to-air broadcasting rights of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The announcement comes after two state broadcasters began bidding against each other to show the 16 live and 32 delayed matches.

Sky TV had the broadcasting rights for the remaining live games.

Cabinet had considered what level of public money it was prepared to spend on the bid, Mr Key said. .

Earlier, Mr Key said the joint bid would not be more than previous individual bids.

But, because the bid was now before the International Rugby Board (IRB) for consideration, he would not say how much the Government would spend.

MTS will receive extra funding from Te Puni Kokiri (the Ministry for Maori Development) to purchase “related services” if the bid is successful, Mr Key said.

TVNZ then submitted a Government-backed bid for a higher amount.

Debate over the broadcasting rights erupted when it was revealed Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples had authorised $3 million from Te Puni Kokiri to be used to fund a stand-alone MTS bid.

The final, semifinals, bronze medal game and the quarterfinals will be played live on all three channels.

Under the new, Cabinet-approved, bid MTS would broadcast all 48 World Cup games – 16 live and 32 delayed.

The All Blacks’ pool game against France will screen live on TV3 and MTS.

TVNZ and MTS will screen live the opening ceremony and opening game between Tonga and the All Blacks.

The remaining six live games will air only on MTS.

The remaining six live games will air only on MTS.

The IRB will also consider new media and other issues apart from the free-to-air rights.

The joint-bid, which still has to be accepted by the IRB, will mean all New Zealanders will get to see the games, he said.

A governance group would be established to oversee the project.

Dr Sharples said he was “delighted” MTS would be leading the joint-bid and the three broadcasters will work together for the first time for “the benefit of the whole country”. Members from each of the broadcasting companies and two ministerial appointments will form the remainder.

MTS board member Wayne Walden will chair the group.

The Labour Party and others criticised the Government’s handling of the bids as shambolic and Mr Key has admitted it was not handled well.

Television Broadcasters’ Council executive director Rick Friesen will be the lead manager for the project.

Tougher animal cruelty punishments needed

.

A group of senior lawyers is calling for higher maximum sentences in cases of extreme animal cruelty.

The pro bono “panel of prosecutors”, which offers free legal services to the Auckland SPCA, said higher sentences would send a clear message that violence against animals was unacceptable .

Panel member David Jones QC said sentences imposed in cases of extreme animal abuse fell considerably short of the maximum penalty.

The panel was set up in April to help the SPCA meet the costs of prosecutions.

Actual sentences would increase if the maximum penalty was raised to five years, Mr Jones told the Auckland Law Society newsletter Law News.

While the law allowed for sentences of up to three years’ jail, the longest sentence imposed was 12 months, which was subsequently reduced to 10.”

Fellow panel member Mike Heron said recent cases of horrific animal cruelty had resulted in relatively light sentences.

“This would add to the effectiveness of animal welfare legislation and bring home to the public that animal cruelty is not acceptable.”

Evidence had shown that a number of psychopathic offenders were known to have also abused animals, he said.

“I think there is a sound argument for bringing the length of some animal cruelty sentences closer to those for violence against humans.

For the past seven years the S PCA has aimed to raise public awareness of animal cruelty with its annual List of Shame, which this year comprehensive 52 “deeply disturbing” instances of severe animal abuse.

The public questioned why sentences did not reflect those given in cases of cruelty to humans, he said.

A nailgun attack on a cat in Christchurch last month was described by the SPCA as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty it has encountered.

More recent instances of animal abuse have shocked animal lovers.

In August, South Auckland man Paea Taufa was found cooking his pet dog in a backyard barbecue.

The dead cat was found with a dozen 85mm nails in its head.

.

Mr Taufa was not prosecuted because the dog had been killed humanely

Sarkozy criticises US justice in Polanski case

.French President Nicolas Sarkozy says the US warrant issued for Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski on a 32-year-old sex charge was “not a good administration of justice”. .
“But I add that it is not a good administration of justice to do this 32 years after the facts when the person concerned is today 76 years old.
The Polish-French national was arrested on September 26 in Zurich, where he had gone to collect an award at the Swiss city’s film festival.”
Polanksi has been regarded as a fugitive by US authorities since he fled the country in 1978 after admitting to having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
But Mr Sarkozy says his comments were a mistake.
French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand labelled Polanski’s arrest “absolutely horrifying”.
“Frederic Mitterrand has recognised that his declaration was an error and that he regretted it.
Mr Mitterrand’s remarks turned the spotlight on himself and his 2005 autobiographical novel. I couldn’t say it any better,” Mr Sarkozy said.

.
He was forced to appear on national television last week to deny having ever engaged in paedophile acts
